The Fall Shopping List, Ten Things Under $150

Wool socks, a good umbrella and a lipstick worth keeping. Ten fall buys under $150, with retailer links and prices noted for each one.

The first cold morning always exposes the gaps: thin socks, a missing hat, an umbrella that turns inside out. This fall shopping list fills them with ten things, each under $150, split across wardrobe, beauty, and home. We picked every item ourselves. There are no affiliate links and no gifted products, and the prices come straight from each retailer’s site.

How we built this fall shopping list

The rules for this fall shopping list were simple. Each item had to cost under $150, solve a real cold-weather problem, and come from a retailer that lists its price openly. We skipped anything that needed a discount code to make sense.

We also aimed the fall shopping list at things that last more than one season. A good umbrella, a wool sock, and a teapot can all see several winters. The beauty picks are the exception, because makeup has a shelf life once you open it. Ten items, three categories, one total: the whole list comes to about $443 if you buy everything.

The fall shopping list: wardrobe

1. A cashmere crew neck, $99.90

Uniqlo’s Women’s Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater is the plain, warm layer that goes under a coat and over a slip dress. A crew neck is the easiest shape to wear every day. It sits flat under tailoring, and it looks just as good alone with jeans. Choose a neutral like gray, navy, or oatmeal if you want it to work with everything. 2. Merino hiking socks, $26

Darn Tough’s Hiker Micro Crew Midweight sock is knit from merino wool in Vermont. The brand lists it as a men’s style, so women should check the size chart. A cushioned sock makes city boots far kinder on long walking days. Merino also handles damp weather well, which is useful from October onward. Buy two pairs, so one can dry while you wear the other.

3. A knit cuffed beanie, $19.99

Carhartt’s Knit Cuffed Beanie, style A18, is a workwear staple with a fold-up cuff that doubles the warmth over the ears. It is 100% acrylic, so it washes easily and holds its shape.

4. A compact umbrella, $65

The Davek Mini measures under 7 inches closed and weighs about 8 ounces, according to the brand. That is small enough for an evening bag. It also comes with an unconditional lifetime guarantee, according to Davek. Keep it in the bag you carry most, and the forecast stops being a problem.

5. A silky matte lipstick, $25

MAC’s M·A·Cximal Silky Matte Lipstick comes in 40 shades. Fall is the season for the deep end of that range: berries, bricks, and browns. A dark lip looks sharp with a short cut, and our guide on how to ask for a bob haircut covers that half of the look.

6. A matching lip pencil, $25

The MAC Lip Pencil comes in 35 shades, including the browns Chestnut, Spice, and Oak. A liner keeps a dark lipstick from feathering, so buy the two together.

Before you open either one, a quick note on safety. The law does not require cosmetics to carry an expiration date, the FDA notes in its guide to using cosmetics safely. So write the date you open a product on the tube. The agency also advises against sharing makeup, and it says not to use lip liner on your eyes.

7. A hand balm, $37

Aesop’s Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm, in the 75 mL tube, lists mandarin rind, rosemary leaf, and cedar atlas among its botanicals. Cold air and indoor heat dry out hands fast, and a tube fits in a coat pocket. It also makes an easy small gift for a host.

8. A blackcurrant candle, $90

Diptyque’s Baies candle, in the classic 6.7-ounce size, pairs blackcurrant with rose. It is the most expensive thing on this fall shopping list. However, it is also the one that changes how a room feels on a dark evening. Keep it clear of anything that can catch, as our Halloween decor ideas explain.

An unbranded teapot, a plain round tea tin and a white candle on a wooden table, the home section of a fall shopping list

9. A cinnamon tea, $12.50

Harney & Sons’ Hot Cinnamon Spice comes in a classic tin of 20 sachets. According to Harney & Sons, John Harney developed the blend in the early 1980s. It mixes black tea with three types of cinnamon, orange peel, and cloves.

10. A teapot with an infuser, $42.75

The ForLife Stump Teapot with Infuser holds 18 ounces, about two large mugs. Because the infuser lifts out, loose tea and sachets both work. Pair it with the cinnamon tea above, and the home section of this list costs under $150 on its own.
